Public records are available for such an alarming rate that seem to have no more privacy. For a small fee, you can look past anyone on the Internet, and get the tax records, personnel records, address, and many other things. Information has always been available – at least most of it – but it used to be very difficult to get unless it was a government law enforcement officer. But the Internet has changed all that by allowing the construction of large databases and the acceleration of the rate of travel information at speeds faster than light.
On the other hand, there are some good things about the public records are available. If anyone can be investigated throughout the world, then even government officials are not invulnerable to the prying eyes of public opinion. Perhaps it will make our society more open because everyone is allowed to see everything about everyone else. The other thing about public records is not always accurate. I was listed (when I investigated) to have an address that had not had in years! And besides, in one way, it was me, but my name was misspelled.

Far more frightening than the availability of public records is the prevalence of secret government data bases. They know that not only the things everyone knows: the mortgage, taxes, liens, lawsuits, address history, evictions if necessary, etc. They also know all sorts of things that are not supposed to know according to the Constitution. They spy on people and keep track of their political affiliation, can tap phones and communications watch. It is easy to sound paranoid about these things, but the truth is that there is no way of knowing precisely what the government knows and what does not. We can only hope they use this information responsibly, but how do we know they will. Especially in recent years, with the scare of terrorism, which have gone much further in terms of private espionage earlier.
A service that has always been available to those who are willing to pay, even before it was so easy to obtain public records from across the country, has been the private detective. Customers can order these researchers to follow around and watch people take photos of them, ask questions of their relatives about them, and do all sorts of creepy, stalkerish things, and everything is legal.
